Foundation repair in Killeen, Texas

Foundation help for Killeen homes, including the many slab houses built as the city grew alongside Fort Hood.

Killeen is Bell County's largest city, with 153,095 residents in 2020. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway platted it in 1881 and named it for Frank P. Killeen, a railroad manager. It grew into a military boom town after Camp Hood opened in 1942 and became Fort Hood in 1950. The post was renamed Fort Cavazos in 2023 and redesignated Fort Hood in June 2025, this time honoring Col. Robert B. Hood, a World War I soldier.

Different ground from the east side of the county

Killeen sits west of the Balcones Escarpment on the Grand Prairie, which is rolling and cut by creek valleys, with clayey soils over limy subsoil and limestone. That doesn't mean foundations here stay put. Clay layers over rock still shrink and swell, and on sloping lots, runoff and cut-and-fill pads can leave one side of a house on different ground than the other.

Lots of homes, lots of turnover

Much of Killeen's housing went up fast, and with military families coming and going, homes change hands often. That means plenty of foundation questions come from inspection reports. A written evaluation with floor readings, and any records of past repairs, makes a sale go easier for buyers and sellers alike.

Registration and permits in Killeen

The City of Killeen requires contractors to hold a general construction registration from the city before applying for permits, and notes that registration doesn't replace a permit. Building Inspections handles both. Ask your contractor whether they're registered and whether your job needs a permit.
